Beta hCG (Pregnancy - Blood)

What it is (overview)

Beta hCG (Pregnancy – Blood) is a quantitative blood pregnancy test that measures the amount of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your bloodstream. hCG is produced soon after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus, so it can be detected early in pregnancy—often earlier than a urine pregnancy test. Because this test reports a specific number (rather than just “positive” or “negative”), it can help estimate how pregnancy is progressing over time.

In general, very low or undetectable hCG usually means you are not pregnant (or it may be too early to detect). A detectable or rising hCG level is consistent with early pregnancy. In the first weeks of a typical pregnancy, hCG levels usually rise quickly (often increasing substantially every 2–3 days), and then the pattern changes later in pregnancy. A single result is helpful, but doctors often interpret hCG by looking at repeat measurements (called “serial hCGs”) and pairing results with symptoms and ultrasound findings.

Keep in mind: hCG results do not by themselves confirm that a pregnancy is located in the uterus. Levels that rise more slowly than expected, plateau, or fall may suggest concerns such as miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside the uterus), but only your clinician can interpret your results in context.

When & why it's usually done

A doctor may order a beta hCG blood test when pregnancy needs to be confirmed early or when more detail is needed than a home urine pregnancy test can provide. Common reasons include:

Confirming pregnancy soon after a missed period, especially if urine testing is negative but pregnancy is still suspected.

Evaluating early pregnancy symptoms such as:

missed period, nausea, breast tenderness, fatigue, pelvic cramping, or vaginal bleeding.

Assessing possible complications in early pregnancy, especially when there is pain or bleeding. Serial beta hCG levels can help clinicians evaluate whether an early pregnancy appears to be developing as expected and can support assessment for conditions like ectopic pregnancy or early pregnancy loss (miscarriage).

Following hCG levels over time after treatment for miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, to ensure hCG returns to non-pregnant levels.

Monitoring certain tumors that produce hCG. In some situations, beta hCG is used as a tumor marker, for example in gestational trophoblastic disease or specific germ cell tumors, to help guide treatment and follow-up.

You may also be asked to take this test before certain medications, imaging studies, or procedures when knowing pregnancy status is important for safety.

  • Normal intrauterine pregnancy (including very early pregnancy)
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Threatened miscarriage / early pregnancy loss (miscarriage)
  • Blighted ovum (anembryonic pregnancy)
  • Molar pregnancy (hydatidiform mole)
  • Gestational trophoblastic disease (persistent trophoblastic disease/choriocarcinoma)
  • Germ cell tumors that may produce hCG (e.g., some testicular or ovarian tumors)

Health goals where it may help

  • Early and accurate pregnancy confirmation (blood pregnancy test for hCG)
  • Tracking early pregnancy progression using serial quantitative hCG levels
  • Prompt evaluation of bleeding or pelvic pain in pregnancy to improve safety
  • Supporting fertility and family planning decisions (timely confirmation after conception)
  • Monitoring recovery after miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy treatment
  • Monitoring and follow-up for hCG-producing conditions (e.g., gestational trophoblastic disease) as part of a care plan
